To highlight its efforts to help the homeless, the Raber Public Library will host a canned goods drive July 1 through Aug. 31. Read more.
[[Add more information about what kinds of items can be donated and why a food drive will help people.]] Food donations can be delivered to the library until August 31.
For the past few years, Raber Public Library has worked to help homeless patrons in the community. Staff provide cards with phone numbers for local resources such as food pantries, shelters, and public transportation.
Librarians reported an increase in requests for the cards whin the past year. They gave out 75 cards in 2006 and 150 cards in 2007.
[[Include a quote about this and what it might mean about homelessness.]]
For many homeless patrons, the library also acts as a day shelter or as a quiet, safe environment to bring their children. The homeless can use books and other library media on site, even though they are ineligible for library cards.
The library's focus on education has helped at least one homeless patron find a job. Thanks fo free computer classes, Joe Schmoe found a job as a data entry clerk. He still visits the library regularly to check out books and use the computer.
[[Quote from Joe about his experience.]]
Local volunteers have also worked with the library to help children in the community by knitting hats and mittens. During the winter months, a box containing such items is placed near the library entrance. Any child without such items can take them from the box for free.
